Who wants healthier, glowing skin? It’s my personal life quest to find foods that improve the skin, and this one is a must have! What I am talking about here my friends, is hemp seeds. I have been a fan of this seed for a long time. Being a plant eater for going on 11 years now, I have always loved to incorporate hemp seeds for their unique nutritional profile. Hemp seeds are also delicious and can be consumed in so many ways. You can even sprinkle them on to so many dishes to bump up the “nutrition points” for any meal. Now I am so grateful to be a brand ambassador for Manitoba Harvest, because they are my absolute fave when it comes to hemp seeds (and I’m not just saying that! Promise!)

Let’s get in to why they are so amazing:

  • Complete Plant Based Protein – If you are looking to cut back on meat consumption or are a vegan or vegetarian this is an excellent source of protein, containing all essential amino acids. Dr. Mercola even says “With all of the essential amino acids and an amount of protein similar to beef (by weight), hemp seeds are an excellent form of plant-based protein.” Good quality protein is essential for building and repairing tissue in the body, like your skin. Let me say that again, good quality protein is essential for healthy skin.
  • Rich in Gamma-Linolenic Acid – Hemp seeds are rich in gamma-linolenic acid or GLA, which is a building block for prostaglandins, and they are hormone like substances found in almost every tissue in the body. They help control inflammation, contraction and relaxation of smooth muscles, constriction of blood vessels and blood pressure, and they are  proven to reduce redness, itchiness, toughness and inflammation in atopic (an allergic reaction) skin. Pretty important stuff!
  • Rich in Omega 3’s – Hemp seeds are an excellent source of plant based omega 3’s, and they are the perfect omega 3 to 6 ratio. Yes, the conversion for plant based omega 3’s is a little longer and relies on many vitamins and minerals, it is still great to make sure you are getting your daily intake through food. Omega 3’s have been shown to make skin more smoother, and youthful, with anti-aging effects. They can also improve inflammatory conditions like acne, eczema and psoriasis.
  • Full Of Beauty Mineral: Zinc – Zinc is a very important mineral to have, for many functions in the body, especially for the skin! Zinc fights inflammation and redness in the skin. It also helps regulate the production of oil, supports tissue repair, and, hello, collagen formation! All about helping collagen formation!

So, there it is! Four amazing skin benefits from the tiny, yet mighty hemp seed! Trust me, there are so many amazing reasons to eat them, but those 4 have me sold. I eat 1-3 tbsps almost every day 😉

Xoxo
